When I first joined Aimset's community on Discord a year ago, I was starting out as a UX Designer myself. In an attempt to join the work-force, I soon realised that employers valued shipped projects and cross-functional team experience. Aimset solves this problem by creating a platform wherein community members can post project ideas and helps contributors discover projects that match their interests and skills. It acts a space where individuals can find fulfilling projects, grow their skills, and build credibility in the tech community.

To understand how users collaborate and the factors affecting effective collaborations, the team conducted a survey asking what they cared about the most when looking for projects or team members and the challenges faced by them in the process.

39.6% of the users experienced difficulty finding collaborators with the right skills
58.5% of the users stated poor communication among team members was the reason for ineffective collaborations
56.6% users expressed inefficient project management as one of the challenges
34% felt there was a general lack of support from team members
Other reasons mentioned by users included difficulty finding teams, an imbalance in distribution of tasks, unclear goals and priorities, unreliable collaborators and the need to constantly upskill oneself.

We also identified and analysed some potential competitors. While we found some that came close to what Aimset was trying to do, most of them had one main issue: they were either focused on experienced people or graduates only, which was not very inclusive of other backgrounds. Furthermore, the onboarding processes were unclear and the wait times were unbelievably long.

Following the initial research phase, the team had a brainstorming session post which we narrowed down the scope to some ideas from the session. We achieved this by relying on the research to understand what users cared the most about and assigned priorities. These ideas were then translated into functional requirements ranked by priority and we started working on some sketches & wireframes.

For the MVP, there were two main flows: one from the perspective of a 'Project Owners' (users who created projects) and the other from the perspective of 'Contributors' (users who collaborated with Project Owners).

The community members on Discord were actively creating projects and collaborating with each other within the server. During ideation, we reached out to them frequently conducting short surveys, polls and open conversations to make sure we were on the right track. We often posted our early phase sketches and wireframes in the community to gain insights into what users thought and how they interpreted information.

Our platform's advanced discovery system takes into account users' profile details and activity and makes recommendations that are better suited to their preferences, significantly improving their chances of succeeding.

We regularly organize hackathons in the Discord community server. These hackathons usually revolve around one theme only - creating socially impactful projects within a given time frame. The hackathon provides users, from all walks of life, an opportunity to be innovative and collaborative while developing solutions to real-world challenges in a healthy competitive environment.

We realized credibility is a huge factor while finding collaborators. We encourage users to verify their profiles through endorsements and verified credentials. Doing this awards users with badges and achievements which help build trust within the community and beyond, showcasing their expertise and commitment to not just members in the community but also potential employers.

Currently, we're developing and testing our solution with users before we can officially launch and make it available to a wider audience. The platform is currently in development and is scheduled to go live in October this year.
